The number of Bibles we distribute to new Christians around the world shows Bible Society is committed to teaching people to read, understand and engage with the Bible for themselves.

Literacy classes go hand in hand with Bible translation, production and distribution. At the launch of a new translation, Bible Society trains teachers and runs literacy classes through the church – with the Bible as the main text. Read more / hide

Students of all ages have the opportunity to learn to read, many for the first time. As well as opening their eyes to the Bible’s life-changing message in their language, their self-esteem is boosted by being able to read. They tell us they can help their children with homework and fulfil ambitions to work.

In Egypt, 20,000 students were taught by 1,300 volunteers in one of Bible Society’s biggest literacy programmes. Housewife and mother-of-two Samira said, ‘I want to teach other people and be useful. Now I can read the Bible to my son. I want to plant God’s Word in him from the beginning.’

Literacy classes also help preserve a language and culture. In Sudan, the government has given its backing to a Bible Society programme to encourage the Moro people to learn to read. They will study Moro history and read the Bible in Moro to keep Christianity alive in the community.
