Open the Book members have access to a range of resources to support their storytelling.
Storytellers use the Open the Book Storytelling Bible and Storyteller’s Handbook. The Storytelling Bible includes 90 stories, beginning at Genesis and going all the way through to Revelation.
The Handbook provides everything Storytellers need to say in order to create a full assembly. A welcome and introduction lead into the story which is read, followed by a quiet moment for reflection and wonder, concluding with a prayer.
Open the Book is a scripted programme and we ask all Storytellers to stick to the script. Staff in schools value Open the Book because they know exactly what has been said and can answer with confidence any questions they may be asked about the content of the assembly. We've taken great care to ensure that the stories and assembly scripts are acceptable and accessible to the widest possible audience.
Open the Book is a valuable resource, providing a strong and consistent feature for assemblies/acts of collective worship. Teachers can link the Bible stories through to Religious Education lessons.
This material isn't intended for use by school professionals as a resource book for assemblies. Churches or organisations offer it as a free service to schools.
Makaton
Some of our schools have children with special needs, particularly communication difficulties. Makaton is a sign language used widely in primary schools to help children to communicate and understand. By signing some of the basic words of each story, Storytellers can include the children in their assemblies and reach more children with the Bible stories. Each of the 90 stories in the Storytelling Bible has a video to show some of the basic signs needed to tell the story. If you have any further questions, please email our OtB Makaton tutor Steff Shepherd (steff.shepherd@biblesociety.org.uk).
Each of the 90 stories in the Storytelling Bible has an accompanying Bible study to enable Storytellers to look more deeply into the stories as they present them in their assemblies.
There is a special Open the Book song, written by Caroline Hoile from Grumpy Sheep Music. There are two versions of the song, for singing before and after the assembly. Download audio, video or sheet music in English or Welsh.
Each of the 90 stories has prop and costume ideas to bring the stories to life.
There are Open the Book stickers to give out to those that have helped in the assemblies.
Open the Book members also have access to an exciting new holiday club resource.
